Emerald Cut

Not to be confused with the sparkling green of an Emerald gem stone, the Emerald cut is a style of precious stone cutting. Emerald cut stones are a type of step cut, one where the facets actually appear to be “steps” carved into the gem. Specifically, the Emerald cut uses a series of flat rectangular facets stepping down off the stone plateau to give it a unique brilliance, quite different to that of an asscher or princess cut.

The flat planes of the outside edges allow for a variety of side stones shapes. Typical pairings would be two or three side baguettes, two half-moons, and other smaller Emeralds, but not Trillions, as their sparkle makes the center emerald cut look too flat and unimportant. The emerald cut is a rectangular shape with slightly cropped corners. Originally, the cut was developed for use on actual emeralds, but its sophisticated appearance quickly led it to be a popular choice for diamonds as well. The long lines of the rectangular shape give it less overall fire than popular round shapes, but the flashes of color in emerald cut engagement rings will be more prominent as they are reflected in the sleek stone.
